Self-trust can be your guide to weight loss

A few weeks ago, I discussed learning to trust your body and its signals. But there’s another layer to trust that’s just as important for your intermittent fasting journey: trusting your mind and intuition.
We’ve all been there – relying on sheer willpower to force ourselves through something we don’t fully believe in. It’s like pushing a boulder uphill. We exhaust ourselves trying to force our behavior to align with a desired outcome, pretending we’re not feeling the resistance within.
We’ve been conditioned to believe that self-discipline will get us through, if we stay strong. But what if the problem lies deeper? If we haven’t addressed our limiting beliefs and negative experiences surrounding food and weight loss, that boulder becomes impossible to move. Sustainable change comes from a place of deep conviction and certainty with faith in the best outcome for you, not just blind determination.
Past experiences can be difficult to deal with so we bury them, along with negative self-talk, and unprocessed emotions. The negativity builds up, creating a fog that clouds our intuition. After they’ve been ignored for a long time, we become scared of what we might find if we dig deep. But that’s exactly what we need to do – open those doors and let in some fresh air.
Except, there’s a guard at the door: our ego. Your mind is conscious awareness and subconscious processes, whereas your ego maintains your sense of identity, and will protect it at all costs.
The ego acts like a sly advisor, whispering promises of instant gratification while steering you towards unhealthy choices. It clouds your judgment, making you both avoid responsibility for your actions and feel burdened by things outside your control. It even thrives on scarcity, planting the fear that there’s not enough success, love, or weight-loss progress to go around. By letting go of expectations, you can keep your ego in check and find that deeper trust in yourself.
So, how do we tap into this deeper trust? With honest self-reflection. Sit down in a quiet place and ask the tough questions. What does it mean to you to be healthy? How do you look at others who are skinny? What does achieving your weight loss goals look like to you? How will it change your life? Why do you want that change? What fears might be holding you back?
Only when we trust our minds can we truly trust our intuition. By listening to our inner voice and understanding the “why” behind our actions, we can finally break free from self-imposed limitations and step into the powerful driver of our own success. This is the foundation of true, sustainable weight loss through intermittent fasting. It’s about trusting yourself – mind, body, and spirit.
