I’m in awe of where my life has led me, but even in that wonder, there’s times I find myself struggling to find light in what seems like overwhelming shadows. It’s usually a single issue, and it can take the joy out of life. When it happens (and sometimes it can take me a while to even realize I’m letting negativity pull me in), it’s essential to use the strategies I’ve learned to lift me back into a more positive mindset.
One of the tools I always lean on during times like this is the practice of gratitude.
Gratitude is acknowledging all the good that exists in your life. Life has its ups and downs, and by embracing gratitude, you learn to view every experience as a valuable part of your journey. Too often we take what we have and all that we’ve achieved for granted, moving on to the next mountain to climb without taking time to stop, celebrate and be thankful. Gratitude helps you see meaning and worth, allowing you to honor all your treasures and accomplishments, especially during times when you may feel like you have little.
Developing a gratitude mindset is not about suppressing negative feelings or pretending everything is perfect. And it’s not about comparing yourself to others who have less to reinforce a sense of your own value. Gratitude is a deliberate practice that grounds you in the here and now, allowing you to appreciate the beauty you already have in your life. When you’re stuck focusing on the dark, gratitude leads you towards the light, refocusing your mindset away from what you lack and towards what you have.
Gratitude requires deliberate effort and consistent attention. Unlike spontaneous emotions, it’s a habit we have to cultivate, but over time gratitude can rewire your brain, strengthening positive thinking patterns and building optimism that will become second nature.
When you practice gratitude regularly, it can change how you show up in life. It will influence better choices and help you build an abundance mindset. It’s not about ignoring the challenges you face, but in practicing gratitude you’re making a purposeful choice to focus on positives, which then attracts more positivity. When we focus on negatives, all we get is more negativity.
Positivity and an abundance mindset developed through gratitude will help reframe your thinking from feeling like you never have enough, to seeing that you have more than you realize. The simple act of recognizing even small blessings (think of a sunny day, quiet time to read a book, or a smile on a baby’s face) can help you navigate even the most challenging days.
If you’re in a spiral of negativity, you can take back control by finding things to be grateful for. Just try it. Take a moment to write a list of all the things you’re thankful for in your life. Notice how your mood changes, even a little. On top of that, less negativity means less stress, lower anxiety, and better sleep (since you won’t have as many thoughts keeping you up at night).
If you’re struggling to make progress in your weight loss journey, gratitude can help you shift your focus from perfectionism to recognizing your successes as well as your challenges. This shift instills a mindset that values effort, growth, and the lessons learned. You’ll also develop resilience which will make it easier to bounce back from those challenges. Your motivation to pursue long-term goals will increase and you’ll find joy in the journey rather than getting discouraged by obstacles.
Practicing gratitude can enhance your relationships by fostering greater empathy and understanding. As you become more appreciative of the people in your life, you’re likely to offer more kindness and support, which in turn strengthens your connections and builds a more supportive community.
So, the next time you find yourself feeling overwhelmed or negative, take a moment to practice gratitude. Notice the small things, be thankful for your loved ones, and find joy in the ordinary. Gratitude is about appreciating the richness of life, in all its complexity. Embracing gratitude is not just about feeling thankful—it’s about living with a deeper sense of purpose and contentment.
